Michelle Obama got candid about the struggles in the early years of her marriage to Barack Obama, when she was stuck taking care of their two kids by herself.
In a recent revelation, Michelle Obama the former first lady at 58, openly discussed the challenges within her marriage to Barack Obama disclosing a period of about 10 years where she “couldn’t stand” her husband. This revelation was made during a Revolt TV roundtable hosted by Angie Martinez on December 15, while she was promoting her new book. “The Light We Carry.” Michelle emphasized that discussions about the effort and difficulty required in a marriage, even when deeply in love, are often overlooked. Reflecting on those challenging years, Michelle pointed out that the strain occurred when their daughters Sasha and Malia were younger and Barack was fully engaged in his burgeoning political career.
Acknowledging the fluctuating dynamics in their relationship, Michelle stressed that marriage is never a consistent 50/50 partnership. She shared insights into the asymmetry, stating, “There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, 40 but guess what? 10 years — we’ve been married 30.” Despite the challenging times, Michelle expressed a perspective that prioritizes the longevity and endurance of the marriage, asserting, “I would take 10 bad years over 30. It’s just how you look at it. And people give up… ‘Five years; I can’t take it.’”
Throughout their 30-year marriage, the Obamas have navigated various challenges together. Michelle highlighted her support for Barack during his stint as an Illinois Senator and his subsequent presidential run in 2008. The couple’s daughters, born in 1998 and 2001, have grown up rapidly with Michelle sharing in a recent interview on Today that Malia and Sasha have moved in together in Los Angeles. Despite experiencing a phase when the sisters couldn’t stand each other, Michelle expressed joy in witnessing their unique bond evolving.
Now that they find themselves as empty nesters Michelle and Barack are relishing the quality time they spend together. The couple celebrated their 30th anniversary in October, and Michelle commemorated the occasion with a heartfelt tribute, accompanied by a beachside photo of them. Her message expressed gratitude for the adventures shared over the last 30 years and the joy of having each other by their sides. The Obamas are now savoring this new phase in their relationship, cherishing the journey they’ve undertaken together.
